US President Joe Biden has signed executive orders that aim to bring relief to an economy still being hammered by the coronavirus.

The orders call for increasing food aid, making it easier to claim government benefits, protecting unemployed workers and increasing the minimum wage.

The measures are largely stopgaps as Congress considers a $2.4 trillion stimulus plan.

Mr Biden says he’s acting quickly to bring relief to Americans impacted by the pandemic.

“The bottom line is this, we’re in a national emergency, we have to act like we’re in a national emergency. So we’ve gotta move, with everything we’ve got. We’ve gotta do it together,” he said.
